Lanzarote Holiday Essentials

Lanzarote is the fourth largest and most easterly of the Canary Islands.  Locted just seventy miles off the coast of Africa and blessed with a year round clement climate, this little speck of Spain is on the same line of latitude as parts of Florida and Mexico.  And has long been established as a hot favourite with British tourists.  Who account for well over 50% of the 1.5 million non-Spanish nationals that visited the island during the course of last year.

Lanzarote was subjected to a six year long volcanic eruption in the 1730´s which has done much to shape the islands landscape and culture.  At the time this cataclysmic event obviously caused widespread devastation, forcing many islanders to emigrate.  Today however Lanzarote is known as The Island of Fire and the volcano park at Timanfaya – the epicentre of these eruptions - is by far and away the biggest tourist attraction on the island.

Holiday Accommodation in Lanzarote

Lanzarote offers a wide range of good quality and competitively priced holiday accommodation.  The bulk of which is concentrated in the main resorts of Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca.

For those on a budget, holiday apartments offer a good value option – with prices starting from as little as £250 a week for a one bed apartment in the islands busiest and most popular resort – Puerto del Carmen.

For those in search of a little more luxury Playa Blanca is the best choice. As the islands southern most resort boasts a big selection of the best quality hotels and holiday villas in Lanzarote.

Visitors keen to explore the island´s many cultural attractions, such as the Jameos del Agua, the Mirador del Rio and the Cactus Garden should seek out accommodation in Costa Teguise.  As this resort is in close proximity to all of the main tourist sights.

Getting to Lanzarote

Lanzarote is serviced by Arrecife airport – which is located around 3km outside the island capital of the same name.  Whilst flights to Lanzarote from the UK are available five days of the week Thursdays and Mondays remain the main arrival days for British tourists.

A number of leading budget airlines currently operate regular flights to the island from major UK airports, including Monarch, easyJet and Thomas Cook.  With return ticket prices starting at around £200 per person, depending of course on the time of year.

Arrecife airport isn´t serviced by an airport shuttle service from the main resorts.

Guests visiting the island on a package holiday will be transported to their accommodation on coaches provided by their tour operator.  Independent travellers however will either have to take a taxi or arrange a hire car.

Getting Around Lanzarote

Whilst the main holiday resorts on the south east coast of the island enjoy regular public bus services the same cannot be said of the islands interior.  Which is where the vast majority of the main tourist attractions are located.

As a result, visitors keen to enjoy some sightseeing are best advised to hire a car.  Which is relatively cheap on Lanzarote, with prices starting from around €20 per day.   Or alternatively they can sign up to one of the many guided tours available – details of which can be found in the reception area of their hotel or apartment complex.

Key Attractions

The eerie volcanic landscapes of the Timnafaya National Park are a must see for any visitor.  Along with the works of the island born artist and architect, Cesar Manrique.  Who fused art with nature to create a series of unique tourist attractions.  Amongst the best is the Cesar Manrique Foundation – the artist’s former home – which was constructed from five underground volcanic bubbles.
